A Little History Lesson
The Hillbillies were started in the late 1960s at El Hasa Temple in Ashland, Kentucky, by Noble Jim Harris. Harris decided there needed to be a sideline degree that devoted its time and resources to the Shrine Hospitals. He received permission from his Potentate to start The Grand and Glorious Order of the Hillbilly Degree. Calling on his experiences as a real hillbilly, he then wrote a ritual . Today, it is the largest group within the Shrine, with more than 170 Temples having charters.
How Clan 46 started
For many years Norm Myles, Bill Kooning, John Tisonis and Alan Cowley, were members of the Toronto Shrine Clowns. Back in the early 1970's, these Nobles went to Macon, Georgia for a Clown Convention where they did very well. At that time, you had to be from a Clown Unit to take the 'HILLBILLY DEGREE'. They were inducted into Clan #4 and obtained the Degree Rights to start a Clan in our RAMESES jurisdiction and of course, the number assigned was then, and still is #46. Al Cowley suggested that we be called the 'HOGTOWNERS' considerin' one o' Toronto's nicknames 'HOGTOWN'. Al was the first Raban of this Clan, Bill Kooning was the 'Keeper of the Cob', John Tisonis was the 'Keeper of the Still', Peter Mitchell was the 'Keeper of the Quill' and Norm Myles was the 'Grand Hat Fitter'. For the first 10 years or so. it was hard to convince the Potentates to give the Unit the credit it deserved. We owe our existance to Robert MacGregor and Ben Hughes 'cause they gave us a chance to prove the 'Hillbillys' could be a first class Club on its own. Prior to this change, the HillBillys had been a Sub unit of the Rameses Clowns. Since that time The Rameses HillBilly Shrine Club' has really come to life and we are a Happy and easy going Club. Thanks for takin' the time to read all this and if you're lookin' for us on the Interweb, we go by a couple different handles. Shrine Centers
